Advocates of Concern Dialog delivered lectures at the first Armenian law exhibition ‘Law as a Guarantee for Development’

On April 23, the Chamber of Advocates of the Republic of Armenia initiated the first Armenian exhibition entitled "Law as a Guarantee for Development" aimed to promote public legal awareness and development of legal culture in general. There are dozens of law offices in Armenia; more than 40 of them applied to participate in the exhibition.

The exhibition covered lectures on different issues of law for lawyers as well as non-lawyers; two of the speakers, Sedrak Asatryan, Director of Concern Dialog law firm, and Advocate Aram Orbelyan, Senior Partner of the same company, participated in the exhibition.

Advocate Sedrak Asatryan, Member of the Board of the Chamber of Advocates of the Republic of Armenia, presented to the audience during discussion workshops the topic of “Law Office Management Skills”. Speaking about the peculiarities of managing law firms, the speaker noted: “Managing law offices has its peculiarities. Advocacy is a business, but not an ordinary one: lawyers provide paid and sometimes free protection of the law as well as advisory services." Sedrak Asatryan also spoke about the culture of establishing law offices, necessity to develop teamwork in advocacy as well as the advantages. "Teamwork makes it possible to achieve the best results, a team where different opinions can be voiced and the best solutions can be found."

Advocate Aram Orbelyan, Senior Partner of Concern Dialog, gave a lecture on Advocate in Post-Revolutionary Armenia at the conference entitled "Revolution, Rule of Law, Public Liberties." He touched upon the role of advocates over the past year, legal issues that arose in the country, violations of human rights, particularly the presumption of innocence and open and public pressure on the courts.

"Many issues arise because of inadequate development of the legal system," Aram Orbelyan emphasized and continued, "as long as Article 3 of the Constitution is not perceived in our country, there can be no democracy", and Article 3 of the Constitution states as follows: "The human being shall be the highest value in the Republic of Armenia. The inalienable dignity of the human being shall constitute the integral basis of his or her rights and freedoms. 2. The respect for and protection of the basic rights and freedoms of the human being and the citizen shall be the duty of the public power. 3. The public power shall be restricted by the basic rights and freedoms of the human being and the citizen as a directly applicable law. "

We are going through difficult but also interesting times, especially for advocates. “Advocates should not interfere with any political processes and the public should not identify advocates with their clients. There is no justice without an advocate. In my opinion, advocates are the speakers of democracy. In a country with dictatorship, no court can be independent and in such countries advocates must alert the public through their activity of any violation of rights and law”, Aram Orbelyan summed up and then answered the Conference participants' questions.

At the conference, lectures were also delivered by famous lawyers from the Paris Bar Association who arrived from France.
